Do’s and Don’ts During Your Tech Internship

Internships are a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience, build your network, and make a lasting impression that could lead to a full-time offer. However, navigating the workplace as an intern — especially in the U.S. tech industry — can be tricky. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts to help you succeed.

1. Documentation & Organization

✅ Do:

  • Maintain clear and structured documentation. Your notes, reports, and presentations should be easy to understand for both your future self and your teammates.
  • Use proper formatting for documents. Apply built-in bullet points, headings, and numbering instead of manually typing them.
  • Name your files logically and consistently to keep track of different versions. e.g. Project_Report_v1.docx
  • When pasting content between documents, use Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on Mac) to remove formatting inconsistencies.
  • Track changes in Google Docs or Microsoft Word when collaborating with others.
  • Always include page numbers in your slides/documents so it’s easy to reference during discussions.
